I woke up in the middle of the night and could see only three stars. That meant clouds, which could mean rain. I woke up Don't Panic and we set up his tent (mine being floated ahead to Agua Dulce). It was cramped but at least we were dry. I didn't really sleep that well.
Today we had to climb. We were trying to get to at least Guffy Campground, so we started at 3550 feet of elevation and were going to end up at 8250 feet over the next 17 miles or so. That meant for a lot of climbing! It was long, and slow going, and I think I get altitude sickness. All morning we were in the clouds. I was wearing two layers of shirts plus my rain jacket, and I was doing okay. After the rain incident, I decided to wear my shorty shorts while hiking instead of pants, so that I would have something long and dry to put on at the end of the day. Because of the clouds, we missed out on some spectacular views (I won't say anything about you know what!)
About a mile after Gobblers Knob, I was just spent. I turned a corner, saw the climb ahead, and I knew I just couldn't do it. I needed a nap. Don't Panic didn't understand this at first, but I plopped myself down and went to sleep immediately. After an hour, he woke me up, and I felt a little refreshed. We pushed on ahead and made it to Guffy Campground. We had hoped of going further, but my nap put us a little behind. We cooked up some tortellini the boyscouts had given us (thanks again guys!) and now I'm looking forward to more sleep.
