Bagging Peaks

Jake is very much into bagging peaks. While down here in Southern California, we have climbed San Jacinto, scrambled up Telescope Peak with our friend Coyote, and just nabbed San Gorgonio.

About a week ago, he and Coyote, with me as support, started out at Shorty's Well in the Badwater Basin of Death Valley (ele. -253) at 3:00am. It took ten hours and fifteen minutes for them to clamber up a steep and unmarked trail to the top of Telescope Peak (ele. 11,049). This hike is believed to be the most elevation one can gain in a single day in the lower 48 (there may be one taller in either Hawaii or Alaska).

Then today, we got up early to head on over to the San Bernadino National Forest, to the trailhead of Vivian Creek. From there, Jake easily hiked up through some snow to the top of San Gorgonio (ele. 11,502), the tallest mountain in Southern California. I, however, remained in the picnic area. Due to swelling in my knee, I've been taking it easy and reserving my pain for the Contintental Divide Trail, which we will start in two weeks!
